<![CDATA[Sweden strengthens its commitment to global health]]> http://indevelop.se.test.levonline.com/news/sweden-strengthens-its-commitment-to-global-health Fri, 06 Apr 2012 14:46:00 +0200

On March 29th 2012 the Swedish Government approved two important decisions that will help to further strengthen the Swedish develop cooperation efforts on global health.

Sweden appoints the world's first Global Health Ambassador

Anders Nordström has been appointed as Ambassador with special responsibility for Sweden's engagement in global health issues. In a press release, the Minister for International Development Cooperation, Gunilla Carlsson, noted that the appointment is an expression of the importance that the government places on global health issues. The Government allocates approximately 4 billion Swedish kronor each year for health-related development assistance. Read the press release (in Swedish)

HIV / AIDS strategy with LGBT perspective
The government also adopted a regional HIV/AIDS strategy for sub-Saharan Africa. The main focus of the strategy is on reducing the number of new HIV infections with particular focus on mother-to-child transmissions.

A second focal area of the strategy is to safeguard the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons in Sub-Saharan Africa. This work will be complementary to Sweden's ongoing multilateral and bilateral efforts to address the needs of LGBT persons, who are often subject to discrimination and acts of violence in their communities.

<![CDATA[Upcoming seminar: Results and lessons learned from 12 years of development cooperation in Macedonia]]> http://indevelop.se.test.levonline.com/news/results-and-lessons-learned-from-12-years-of-development-cooperatinon-in-macedonia Wed, 18 Apr 2012 09:11:00 +0200

Joakim Anger from Indevelop will be presenting the Outcome assessment and lessons from Swedish Development Cooperation with Macedonia 1999 -2012.

At Sida, 4 May, 9:00-12:15

To register, please contact thomas.nystrom@sida.se

12.00 - 12.15 Slutsatser

<![CDATA[Health care service delivery in Zambia]]> http://indevelop.se.test.levonline.com/news/health-care-service-delivery-in-zambia Wed, 02 May 2012 11:20:00 +0200

The Department of Economics at the University of Zambia is carrying out an interesting Public Private Partnership (PPP) Pre Market Assessments aligned with the new health policy encouraging private provision of health care service delivery in Zambia. Professor Dick Jonsson, Indevelop employed Technical Adviser says "we expect to have a research report available in June this year".

The Health Store Foundation founded in Kenya in 1999 tries to increase the Child and Family Wellness (CFW) franchise network. CFW is operating a healthcare franchise network in Kenya (with 76 outlets serving approximately 500,000 people in 2010). Nurses and community health workers own and operate CFW clinics and shops targeting a short list of prevalent diseases that cause over 70% of illness and death in sub-Saharan Africa (e.g., respiratory infections, malaria, dysentery) in addition to treating a range of other health care needs (e.g. skin infections, dressing of wounds, etc.). The outlets concentrate on prevention, detection, and treatment of diseases using standardized procedures and reaches out to the communities through events (e.g., malaria prevention and sale of bed nets), school health screenings, and participation at community gatherings (e.g., church, town meetings, etc.).

Health Store Foundation is expanding the CFW branded franchise system to more countries in sub-Saharan Africa including Zambia under the Private Public Partnership (PPP) initiatives. The Business Innovation Facility in Zambia with support from Dfid, has agreed to provide funding and support towards CFW's exploration of the Zambian market. The Department of Economics was asked to be in charge of a Pre Market Assessment project with the purpose to provide information facilitating decisions whether to set up twenty private health facilities in Zambia. These decisions include CFW franchisee profile, outlet format, site profile, menu of products and services, etc. In pursuit of these key decisions, the market assessment is divided into the following deliverables:

 1. Detailed information on health workers including categories, availability, and regulations governing each category.
 2. Overview of disease prevalence and situation of access to essential drugs, basic healthcare, and prevention services.
 3. Registration requirements and operating environment for The Health Store Foundation® or local affiliate entity.
 4. Information on health insurance.
 5. Detailed information relevant to unit economics of a franchised unit and franchisor support costs.
 6. Consumer insight/willingness to pay survey.

Alicia Månsson won an autographed "Bush Wives and Girl Soldiers" by Indevelop's very own Dr. Chris Coulter

Stefan Dahlgren won Helena Thorfinn's newly best seller "När Floden tar oss"

John Viner and Johan Noren each won a box of Human Rights cards
